In search of fall color

Trip to Vermont on Top of Mount Mansfield

Last week and I ventured up to northern Vermont looking for some fall foliage to photograph. And I was a little surprise not to find much. My adventure started north of Montpelier, the capital of Vermont. I decided when I didn’t see much color where I was staying to travel over to one of my favorite ski locations which is Stowe and travel higher in elevation. I knew I could find some color by going where the temperatures are cooler. My husband suggested I travel up the Toll road. I wasn’t quite sure what he meant. When we ski Stowe the trail Toll Road is one of my favors to take at the end of the day when I’m too tired to handle steeper terrain. I didn’t realize it was actually a road that I could drive on and go up Mount Mansfield on.

When I got to the base of the road I asked the attendant if my small vehicle a Volvo C 30 could actually make it up the mountain. He said, “yeah sure” much to my surprise when I got to the top of the mountain a Porsche was up there! Most of the road is dirt but it’s well graded and easy to travel.

One of the great things about bringing the car up is I could easily bring all of my camera gear, all my lenses, and even my drone to the top! I asked the attendant if I could fly my drone he looked at me and said “yeah sure people do it all the time” I had checked the location to see if there were any major airports in the area so I knew was clear there.

Here are some photos from Mount Mansfield, some color, some infrared and some drone photos.

I’ve only been to the top Stowe in the winter so this was a new experience to me. There’s hiking trails that run the ridge of Mount Mansfield. Vermont’s famous Long Trail traverses the mountain ridge. There’s lots of trails that spider off of the ridge line. It was a lot of fun to take a look. The views were spectacular. I could see all of Lake Champlain to the west, and far beyond the Stowe valley. It’s truly a beautiful place to hike and I highly recommend it.

Have you been to Stow? Tell me what are some of your favorite memories of Stowe?  leave a comment below.
