When Color and Image Quality Matter

Photographing Product Photography

The biggest challenge I see for on-line retailers is having product photography that accurately represent their products.

Today we have so many different ways to view online stores. From our televisions, laptops to mobile devices the way we view color is an uncontrolled medium. When you are trying to match colors for interior design or put together wardrobe selections you can never be quite sure if the color you think you are buying will be what you expect when the product arrives.

Being a professional photographer that comes from a marketing and advertising background I can say the first and most critical part of the equation is to start with color accurate images. I use the SpyderCHECKR – 48 from Datacolor. This is 48 spectrally engineered color patches on a rigid portable case with tripod mount. The SpyderCHECKR is designed to be photographed with the subject. Then I create custom profiles for each studio session in Adobe LightRoom. Adobe LightRoom is my software of choice to cull and edit photos. A custom color preset is created for each studio session and with one click I can automatically adjust the color tones to be correct. Another step that I do to make sure I have color correct images is to make sure the product photography has consistent light and the color balance is properly selected for the light source that I am working in.

Here are some photos from two recent product photography sessions. The company I was working with is Sunset Trading. They manufacturer and distribute furniture that is sold through wholesalers online as well as local furniture stores. One of their strongest product lines is the Slipcovered furniture collections that resist stains.  Sunset Trading sells all kinds of dining room and kitchen furniture as well as bedroom furniture. I would like to say everyone at Sunset Trading is very nice and they are committed to the best customer satisfaction.

The Cloud Puff Slipcovered 7 Piece Modular Sectional Sofa set can be seen here .
